New Science Associates was a small tech-trends analysis firm that was born in 1985, when three Gartner Group executives couldn't convince Gideon Gartner to launch a research service around the burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence (he had recently been burned by a service on videotex; AI was having a rebirth). He fired them, and they convened in one of their kitchens to start New Science.

By 1992, New Science had grown to seven research services and around 70 staff. The services, in launch order, were:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Advanced Software Development (ASD)

  • Intelligent Document Management (IDM)

  • Advanced Network Computing (ANC)

  • Operations and Systems Management (OSM)

  • Continuous Information Environments (CIE)

Ironically, Gartner then bought it.
